AT&T CEO Says ‘Tenet’ Won’t Drop Movie Theatrical Release

John David Washington and Robert Pattinson star in “Tenet,” an upcoming spy movie written and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Warner Bros.

AT&T CEO John Stankey promised moviegoers and theaters that “Tenet” will not skip its theatrical release.

During a earnings call on Thursday, Stankey revealed that he loves the option of releasing movies on HBO Max, but that it won’t be an avenue for big-budget movies.

“I think there could be some things that we had originally rented and built for release in theaters that might migrate to an SVOD build? Sure,” he said. “I think that could happen. Is it going to happen in a movie like ‘Tenet’ or something like ‘Wonder Woman?’ I would be very surprised if that were the case. In fact, I can assure you on Tenet that this will not be the case. “

Stankey’s commitment to releasing “Tenet” in theaters is not surprising. Director Christopher Nolan is a staunch advocate of movie theaters and has insisted that his latest film be released theatrically.

On Monday, Warner Bros. ‘dropped the highly anticipated spy thriller “Tenet” from its debut on August 12 and has yet to announce a new release date. This is the third time the film has been delayed due to the increase in coronavirus cases in the US.

“Tenet” has long been used as an anchor for movie theaters to plan their reopens. When the film was again displaced, that forced AMC, the largest exhibitor in the United States, to change course. AMC will now reopen in mid-August instead of late July.
