ATP Announces Cancellation of 2020 Citi Open | ATP Tour

The ATP and the organizers of the Citi Open, the ATP 500 event in Washington, DC, have announced the cancellation of the Citi Open 2020.

The tournament, due to start on August 13, marked the expected resumption of the ATP Tour after the suspension of professional tennis in March. However, with continued uncertainties affecting the ability to meet key event planning deadlines, the decision was made to cancel the event. ATP continues to work closely with USTA at the Western & Southern Open and US Open, which are scheduled to take place consecutively in New York, beginning August 20.

“It is disappointing that due to these unprecedented times, the Citi Open cannot move forward this year,” said Andrea Gaudenzi, president of ATP. “I know how hard Mark Ein and his team have worked to adapt to the new and constantly changing conditions and I would like to acknowledge their exceptional commitment to organizing the event. Unfortunately at the moment there are still big factors at play that are beyond our control. We look forward to the Citi Open returning as one of our signature American events in 2021. ”

“After months of tireless work by our team and close collaboration with our many stakeholders, we are heartbroken to announce that we unfortunately must postpone the 52nd Citi Open until the summer of 2021,” said Mark Ein, president of the Citi Open. “With only 23 days to go before the tournament begins, there are too many unresolved external issues, including various international travel restrictions as well as troubling health and safety trends, that have forced us to make this decision now to be fair to our players, suppliers and partners, so they can be certain about their planning. ”

The ATP continues to work on the revised 2020 calendar with a new update expected for the next fortnight on a provisional schedule of events that includes the final section of the season until the Nitto ATP Finals in November.
