Atletico Madrid vs. RB Leipzig score: Tyler Adams’ late winner sends German side to Semis of Champions League

RB Leipzig have officially booked their ticket to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the final of the league. A late goal from young American Tyler Adams helped their Spanish opponents, Atletico Madrid, sink into a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

Here’s what you need to know and see from the dramatic 90 minutes:

Top plays

Tyler Adams, American hero
Tyler Adams has been a wild card for RB Leipzig in recent games, playing in any combination of positions deemed necessary for his squad to be successful. Today, that positioning yielded success that his club has never seen before in its already short history. Adams’ time to shine came in the final moments of the game when he felt confident enough to take a shot from just outside the box at the end of a counter from his team.

Adams’s shot was shot hard and true to the goal, but got just enough of a deflection to send Jan Oblak in the wrong direction and not see the ball in the back of the net.

Joao Felix gives Atletico life
Although it was not hoped that this would last until the end of the game, Atletico’s chances came to a late victory, thanks to the talents of Joao Felix. His beautiful run into the coffin forced a desperate clumsy challenge from Lukas Klostermann, who had no choice but to throw himself in front of the Atletico man. Felix deserved the penalty, and he was the one who did it.

Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Leipzig’s Peter Gulasci was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 60 minutes.

The pressure of Leipzig finally breaks through
From the jump it turned out that Leipzig showed that they will force Atletico to play their deep backline style with heavy offensive pressure on their end. It was a style that made a bit of a slugfest in the early stages of the game. But RB Leipzig came out with a sharper focus on this strategy in the second, allowing them to finally break through.

Remarkable performances

Saul Niguez, Atletico Madrid
Not his strongest game and was lucky not to get a card like two. Did not show his normal creativity. Appreciation: 4
