Atlanta shooting: ‘This was a massacre.’ The families of the victims of the Atlanta shooting are calling for justice

“I want to hold her tight,” Webb told CNN about her mother. “Give her a hug … hold her hand, give her a long hug.”

Tan’s ex-husband, Michael Webb, says he just wants justice.

He said, “I think whatever difference we make … that’s justice.” “It was a genocide. We have a justice system and we have to hold it accountable. And our family will be involved in the process as much as we can.”

We asked Asian Americans about their hate experiences. The answers were heartbreaking

“We want justice to happen and we hope it will happen.”

Both residents and public health officials have asked investigators to consider charges of hate crime against the suspect, based on race or ethnicity – both of which are covered under Georgia’s hate crime law.

“Atlanta Mayor Cesha Lance Bottoms told CNN on Saturday that he acknowledged that the crime was committed out of contempt for a particular community and that I think it’s important that prosecutors and police consider bringing those charges. ”

Rallies across the country

After the shooting, Americans gathered in rallies across the country, honoring both victims and condemning the violence against Asian Americans – which has escalated during the coronavirus epidemic.

Hundreds of protesters gathered at a rally in Atlanta on Saturday. A Florida resident who drove eight hours to attend told CNN the violence was “a collision at home.”

“I see my mother, I see my acquaintances, my peers,” said Timothy Fane. “This is an Asian issue but on top of that, this is more than that, this is a human issue.”

“We are together in this struggle,” Henry Wong told CNN-affiliated KGOs at another rally this week in San Francisco. “If we don’t voice it now, when will we?”
Just last week, the San Francisco Police Department announced it would increase patrolling primarily in the Asian neighborhood in response to the “terrible spike in brazen anti-Asian violence in recent weeks.”

“The biggest problem in fighting hate crime is that a lot of incidents are not reported,” California Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, who introduced the bill to establish a statewide hate crime hotline, told CNN. “We want to make it as easy and safe as possible for people to report these incidents of hate crime.”

“The women who died looked like me, they looked like my mom, they looked like my aunt,” New York State Assembly member Yuh-Line New said during a rally in Manhattan on Saturday. “They look like us.”

At least 10 suspected anti-Asian crimes were committed in New York City between January 1 and March 14, according to data from the New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force.

A GoFund May page dedicated to helping the two sons of Mary Grant at the Gold Massage Spa in Atlanta has raised more than 25 million.

Suspected in murder charge

The suspect, 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, was arrested Tuesday night at a traffic stop 150 miles south of Atlanta.

He told police he believed he had a sexual addiction and that he saw the spa as “a lure … that he wanted to get rid of,” Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jay Baker said Wednesday.

He claimed the attacks were not racially motivated, Baker added. But Atlanta police say it’s too early to know the suspect’s motive.

Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon and Wallace said the investigation is ongoing and appropriate charges will be brought.

Long is being held without a chance for bail in Cherokee County, where he faces four counts of murder with mischief, one count of attempted murder, one count of sophisticated assault and five counts of using a weapon while committing a criminal offense.

He has been charged with four counts of murder in connection with two spa shootings in Atlanta, according to Atlanta police.

CNN’s Paul Verkeman, Jason Hanna, Madeline Holkobe and Yunjung CO contributed to the report.
