Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says she tested positive for coronavirus

“COVID-19 has literally come home. I have had no symptoms and have tested positive,” the mayor said on Twitter.

She told MSNBC that she received the news that both she and her husband were positive on Monday. She said they decided to get tested because her husband was sleeping more than normal.

“It is a shock,” she said, noting that she initially thought her husband’s symptoms were due to allergies. “Leaves me speechless”.

The mayor added that his diagnosis highlights how contagious the virus is and that he has no idea where they were exposed.

Coronavirus cases have steadily increased in the US, with a national total of cases exceeding 2.9 million on Monday, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. The university discovered that more than 130,000 people died in the United States.

A mayor who has become the center of national attention during the race trial that is stirring the country and the fight to contain the coronavirus, Bottoms has seen her grow among women considered to be Biden’s running mate in recent weeks.

CNN reported late last month that Bottoms, Senator Kamala Harris of California, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Representative Val Demings of Florida were believed to be the four possible top vice presidents.

Bottoms has leaned toward the prospect of becoming Biden’s running mate.

When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Bottoms last month if she was up for president, she bluntly said, “Yes.”

“There has not been a manual for so many mayors and so many governors across the country dealing with Covid-19 and now with the demonstrations we are seeing across the country,” he said in the interview in late June. “I think there has been a response to the crisis that not many people have been tested in this way in the same way that leaders across the country have been tested in recent months.”

This story has been updated with more details on Bottoms’ diagnosis and his prospects for fellow race Biden.
