ATLANTA – Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce was fired Monday following a disappointing start to the season of intense expectations.
Atlanta team president Travis Slank announced the move in a brief statement released by the team.
Hawks is hopeful that assistant Nate M M Camille will choose to be the interim head coach, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wozniacki. Macmillan is meeting with the coaching staff of Pierce and the rest of the Hawks, sources said. Macmillan has been very loyal to the Pickers.
The Hawks are 14-20 and 11 after a 109-99 loss in Miami on Sunday night at the Eastern Conference. The teams play in Miami again on Tuesday.
“We would like to thank the Locks for their work and commitment to the City of Atlanta, not just the Hawks organization,” Schlenk said in a statement. Slank said the move, less than a week before Atlanta hosted the L-Star Game, would help the team enjoy a second half revival.
“We have expectations for our team on the court and we now believe by making this change we have a strong part of the season,” Slank said. Pierce, who was hired in 2018, was 63-120 (.344) with the Hawks, who lost playoffs every two seasons he completed. Atlanta started the season 10-9, but has lost 11 of its last 15 games.
