Atlanta Braves sign Matt Adams for minor league deal

We’re less than a week away from opening day, but the Atlanta Braves may not have finished adding pieces to their roster. The Braves announced Monday that they signed veteran first baseman Matt Adams for a minor league deal. Adams opted for his minor league deal with the New York Mets on Saturday.

This will be Adams’ second season with the Braves, but he will have to earn his way to the Major League roster. Atlanta currently has a full 40-man roster after adding pitcher Josh Tomlin and first baseman Yonder Alonso over the weekend. It is Alonso with whom Adams is probably competing for a place on the list.

Adams’ first stint with Atlanta returned in 2017 as a replacement for a Freddie Freeman injury after suffering a broken wrist. Adams played well enough for the Braves to move Freeman to third base for a period after his return.

Adams appeared in 100 games for the Braves in 2017 hitting .271 / .315 / .543 with 19 home runs. He divided the 2018 season between Washington and St. Louis and returned to the Nationals in 2019, where he hit .226 / .276 / .465 with 20 home runs in 111 games. He signed a minor league contract with the Mets during the offseason, but chose not to do so to seek another opportunity.
