During the seventh inning, while Rizzo was staring at the deck at the top of the stadium, umpire Hunter Wendelstat was suddenly heard saying “you’re out” on the broadcast, pointing to the stand.

Many speculated that Rizzo had been fired by the West for not wearing a mask – which would have been extremely hypocritical, as the West has a record of suspicion of coronavirus and did not wear its own mask down the field.

Major League Baseball has launched an investigation into the incident with Rizo, who signed a three-year extension with the organization on Saturday.
“We have spoken to the citizens about what has changed during today’s game, and today we will speak with the umpiring crew,” the MLB said in a statement through the Associated Press. “We would expect the West Coast crew to provide a full account of their perspective, and we would follow up with them accordingly.”
