Astros-Athletics brawl leads to 20-game suspension for Alex Cintron, 6 games for Ramon Laureano

Houston Astros battle coach Alex Cintron and Oakland Athletics outfielder Ramon Laureano received discipline from Major League Baseball over their failure to bench clear over the weekend.

On Tuesday, MLB Cintron stopped for 20 games and Laureano for six games after a heated conversation between the two opponents led to a breach of dugout clearing. Cintron’s suspension is the longest for a foul on the field in 15 years, since Texas pitchers pitcher Kenny Rogers received 20 games in 2005 for his substitution with a cameraman.

“I accept the MLB suspension and will learn from it,” Cintron said in a statement. ‘Although I never referred Ramon’s mother, my actions were inappropriate. I apologize for my part in Sunday’s unfortunate incident. As coaches we are kept to a higher standard and we need to be an example to the players. Hopefully other coaches will learn from my mistake that this will never happen again in the future. ”

Laureano appealed his suspension and was able to play Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Laureano told ESPN that Cintron apparently gave a comment in Spanish about his mother. Cintron was in the dugout, while Laureano was on first base after being hit with a pitch. A back-and-forth began and eventually turned over.

The 26-year-old said he owed his parents for his career, which is why he looked red when Cintron made the astonishing remark.

“Every day I wake up with the motivation to be with them,” he said. ‘They sacrificed their lives for me. They made the difficult decision to leave their own children by themselves to the States and follow his own dreams. I am 10 years away from my family. It’s hard to get away from them. Every chance I have to be with her, I feel like I’m in heaven. So for him to say that to me about my mother, it does not sit well. I have a fire in me right away in that second. ”

Despite the binding and the fight, Laureano said he has no sick will for the Astros. He said the only regret he had was charging at Cintron.

“I regret that I imposed on him because he is a loser,” he said. “[A suspension] is understandable, but I hope there are not so many games. ”
