Associate Justice Amy Connie Barrett was sworn in and greeted with an appeal in the election case.

The ceremony took place in the court’s former conference conference room and Barrett placed her right hand and left hand on her family’s Bible as she was sworn in by her husband, Jesse.

All Supreme Court justices except Justice Stephen Breyer attended the ceremony, who listened by phone from their Cambridge home and felt it was safest to avoid travel and attend virtually, according to Court Public Information Officer Kathy Arberg.

All those present wore masks and observed the appropriate social distance for the ceremony, the court said. Barrett’s children were not present.

Barrett was confirmed by the Senate on Monday by a vote of 52-48.

At the White House on Monday, Barrett said in a speech that “it is my privilege to be asked to serve my country” and “to separate duty from political choice.”

“My fellow Americans, even though judges do not face elections, we work for you. It is your constitution that establishes the rule of law and judicial independence that is so central to it.” “The oath I have taken with complete fidelity tonight means that I will carry out my work without any fear or favor and I will do it independently of both the political branches and my own choices.”

Barrett, 48, began his term as an associate judge of the Supreme Court a week before election day and will serve on the court for decades. Its seat on the bench gives a three-to-three majority to the Rs.

Repeat request on the first day

Pennsylvania County attorneys filed an application Tuesday in the Supreme Court seeking Barrett to withdraw from an election-related case.

The Supreme Court is currently considering a Pennsylvania Republican request that judges be asked to block a state Supreme Court decision allowing the counting of votes received three days after the election, even if there is no clear postmark. Lucerne County – whose lawyers did a marvelous job – supports the state court’s decision.

Prosecutors acknowledged that his motion “comes at an inevitable time for Justice Barrett, whose first day as associate justice.”

Barrett refused to commit to withdrawing from the Trump election case

But he said he needed to move quickly because his involvement would be “disastrous for the fragile foundation of integrity and public trust on which the judiciary sits.”

They took note of remarks made by President Donald Trump in September when his nomination was pending, suggesting that the Supreme Court be called to determine the winner of the presidential election.

“The current case is crucial for the presidential re-election bid,” he wrote. “Just as President Trump has put whatever hope or expectation he has in the Supreme Court, he has forced himself to re-use it in this case.” Their integrity and the integrity of this court will not tolerate any other choice. “

Individual judges in the Supreme Court will have to decide whether to reuse themselves. During the confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democrats pressured Barrett if he would keep his promise, but he made no commitment.
