Although the Gunners are still content to splash the attackers, it is at the other end of the park that they must focus, says the former England man.
Former Arsenal center-back Sol Campbell believes that if the Gunners can improve their defense, it would dramatically increase their chances of winning the Premier League.
The Emirates Stadium team last won the league title when they enjoyed an undefeated campaign in 2003-04, a legendary team of which Campbell was a key player, and once again they are out of rhythm this season as they they find sevenths.
However, there have been signs of improvement under new boss Mikel Arteta, with the club posting a third consecutive road win by beating Wolves 2-0 on Saturday.
However, Campbell believes the board should invest in the rear to challenge players like Manchester City and champion Liverpool.
In fact, he cited the example of the Reds dotting Virgil van Dijk in January 2018 as one of the defining offers that allowed them to end a 30-year wait for the league title.
“Look what Liverpool did, you know Van Dijk. For me, could you see Arsenal spending that kind of money? he said Astro stadium £ 75 million ($ 92m) from the man.
“Sometimes that kind of money is needed if a player is nailed down and you have to catch him and he can start to change your team’s perspective, especially from behind.
“I could take something like that. They don’t mind buying Nicolas Pepe and spending that kind of money up front, but you must realize that sometimes you need to catch up with the rest of the boys.

“Sometimes when the player is available and you really think, ‘This guy can really change him,’ and you’ve seen all the scenarios, you might have to dive into your pocket and buy somebody big in the back to grab that and then you build around it.
“But you have to go for it. Go up front, paying a lot of money for the guys up front, but don’t underestimate getting quality defenders to keep that bottom line. “
Although Arsenal have tied David Luiz to a new deal, they remain paired with RB defender Leipzig Dayot Upamecano as a player who could shore up his defense.
