Around the ghats of Finland: More than 400 people are trapped overnight

No initial injuries were reported in the incident as the Viking Line ferry was traveling between Stockholm, Sweden and Turku, Finland.

A statement issued by the Viking Line in Finland said the ship was stranded off the coast at 3:49 p.m. (8:49 p.m.). CNN-affiliated MTV3 reported that strong winds were blowing in the area at the time of the ship’s grounding.

In the social media videos of witnesses on the island, hurricane waves hung over the bow of the ship as it fell ashore.

Divers from the Finnish Coast Guard inspected the hull of the stranded ship and said it was not carrying water or leaking fuel. Passengers were told they would be on board overnight but would be rescued on Sunday.

Lars Saraine, a lieutenant in the West Finland Coast Guard District, told CNN that the evacuation was planned by tugboat tomorrow morning.

Measuring 218 meters (approximately 238 yards) in length of 10 decks, the MS Viking Grace was built to carry up to 3,000 passengers, but capacity has been restricted across the board due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Viking operates several ferries a day between Turku and Stockholm, a 10-hour one-way journey.

This is the second Viking line ship to land on the Aland Islands, a Swedish-speaking region of Finland in the Baltic Sea in the last two months.

In September, another passenger ferry from the Viking Line, the MS M Rela, also ran to the Aland Islands. The narrow passage and shallow water are a defining feature of the water around the islands, making it a challenging area in which large ships are to operate.
