Arizona Cardinals strengthen CB spot by signing veteran Dre Kirkpatrick

GLENDALE, Ariz. In her quest to replace injured cornerback Robert Alford, Arizona Cardinals veteran cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick signed after a one-year contract on Sunday.

Kirkpatrick is the third corner the Cardinals have signed in a week since Alford was lost to the season with a pec injury. Alford was put on IR on Friday. Kirkpatrick gives the Cardinals a veteran outfield presence against Patrick Peterson.

Kirkpatrick is also the second former cornerback of the Cincinnati Bengals signed by the Cardinals last week. On Friday, they signed BW Webb, who started last season in 12 games for Cincinnati.

Kirkpatrick became a free agent when he was released by the Bengals on March 31, ending his eight-year tenure with the franchise.

His release came on the heels of Cincinnati’s massive climb during free agency in which the Bengals added two cornerbacks – Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander. Waynes recently underwent surgery for a pectoral injury and coach Zac Taylor said last week that it was “too early to tell” if he would be able to play at some point in 2020.

Kirkpatrick, 30, started six games on outside cornerback for Cincinnati in 2019 before retiring on Nov. 10.

During his time in Cincinnati, he started with 67 games and made 99 appearances. He counted 10 interceptions, defended 65 passes and 302 tackles.

The Bengals selected Kirkpatrick 17th overall from Alabama in the 2012 draft.
