MARINETTE, Wis. (WBAY) – Marinette County officials say they are experiencing an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the area.
According to county officials, during the first months of the pandemic, there was an average of one or two cases per week, however, in the last month, that number increased from three to four cases per day, and then to seven or eight cases a day.
The county stated that a record 22 new cases were announced in a single day on Monday, July 13.
According to the DHS Tuesday report, 121 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed to date in Marinette County, with 21 new cases reported Tuesday.
County officials remind everyone that if someone tests positive, there will be a contact tracker who will contact you, however they caution that they should be careful of people posing as contact trackers and try to scam you out of money. Contact trackers will not ask for your credit card, bank account numbers, social security number, or send you a link via text message.
Across the river, on Michigan’s upper peninsula, there has also been an increase in cases in Menominee County.
On Tuesday, health officials said there was an increase, though not as large as that of Marinette County.
To date, there have been 46 confirmed cases in Michigan’s Menominee County.
County officials say that although evidence has increased since the start of the pandemic, it is not the only cause of an increase in cases, adding the lack of social distancing and large gatherings have also increased the spread of COVID-19. .
Although officials did not mention President Trump’s stop at Fincantieri Marinette Marine in his announcement, the increase in cases comes approximately two and a half weeks after he spoke at Fincantieri Marinette Marine on June 25.
