On June 12, Netflix dropped a big surprise on YouTube. In the midst of a pandemic, the streamer released a new special from Dave Chappelle titled 8:46, that was filmed just a few days before in one of Chappelle’s ongoing shows in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he currently resides. Chappelle’s Ohio shows – with the title Dave Chappelle and friends: An intimate socially distant affair aka “Chappelle Summer Camp” – have been held regularly all summer, and according to Ticketmaster, shows are currently at least scheduled through this weekend. Tons of great comedians, musicians and actors have appeared for these performances so far, including Chris Rock, David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Talib Kweli, Tiffany Haddish, Michael Che, Common, Michelle Wolf, Sarah Silverman, John Mayer, Erykah Badu, and Jon Hamm. A rather controversial artist was revealed over the weekend with an Instagram post when Silverman revealed that she … performed with Louis CK
If Instagram messages from attendees are to be believed, Chappelle has a plan to benefit all of these guests by tapping the live shows for … eat. Another Netflix special? A documentary like Dave Chappelle’s Block Party? Netflix would not comment when Vulture is asked if there is anything Chappelle Summer Camp especially as series in the works, but again, what some fans have slipped on Instagram points to the existence of one kind of project that we can all look at in the very future. Take, for example, this August 4 Instagram post by an attending show, which pleaded, “search for us on a Nelfix [sic] especially this fall lol ”:
Much more compelling is this Instagram post from another attendee on July 4, who was about a month after Chappelle’s 8:46 specially was taped. A sign was displayed for fans waiting to enter the show, warning: “This show is being recorded for future telecast and other explosion after the producer’s approval and may include photos of the audience or people in it. audience and backstage. Presence at this performance your permission is considered to appear in compensation in such telexes. ”Hmm, sure sounds like a tap!
A third of those who attended Chappelle’s show on August 8 confirmed to Vulture that they had seen the character prior to the show and that cameras were filming all the time, but it’s hard to say because there were multiple screens who broadcast the show throughout the place. That they could just film through it. The attendee noted that they only saw cameras filming the stage and not the audience, adding, “No one mentioned anything about what or for whom they were filming!”
Including 8:46, Chappelle has released all six of his stand-up specials since 2017 on Netflix, so it seems likely that something is also coming out of these coronavirus-era shows – which, for the record, maintain social distancing measures and fast COVID-19 test delivery – the streaming network will go as well. But, given Chappelle’s preference for surprise releases, there’s probably no way to know for sure until everything he does is released. In any case, prepare yourself, because the return of Louis CK to Netflix – like any other network – now seems very much in the cards.
