05/07 Update below. This post was originally published on July 2.
We already know a lot about the upcoming iPhone 12 range, including a surprise price cut. But now we have our best look yet at Apple’s all-new designs and reveals what might be its most neglected update.
In a new exclusive, YouTuber iupdate has achieved the first premium dummy units of the new line of iPhone 12 and their dimensions, finishes and precise materials show that they will not only be the most elegant Apple iPhones in years, but also the best to keep hand (full video below).
04/07 update: As detailed below, the exact design of the cameras in the iPhone 12 range remains unknown, but the new information now reveals that we should expect great things. Following rumors of extremely new video modes for iPhone 12, respected Apple PineLeaks member has confirmed “We were able to uncover evidence of 4K 120 and 4K 240 FPS video modes within the latest iOS 14 Beta 1 file system … Both 4K 120 and 240 FPS are likely to be used for slow motion video. Don’t expect 4K 240 to be available for normal video. 4K 120 is still possible. ” These video modes would represent a seismic leap for video recording on smartphones and a massive differential from the competition. With acclaimed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also promises new “high-end” camera lenses In range, we should expect a significant change in both the look and design of the main cameras on all new iPhones.
05/07 Update: more details of the iPhone 12 have emerged thanks to MacRumors Forum poster iZak. After getting a fictional 5.4-inch iPhone 12 unit, the poster has compared it to the original 4-inch iPhone SE and iPhone 7 (identical to the 4.7-inch iPhone SE 2020) and draws the following conclusions: “To go fast it’s 6mm wider than the iPhone SE and ~ 3mm thinner than the iPhone 7 I’ve scaled it in. This aligns with the CAD drawings I drew previously based on the leaked resolution, which I calculated to be 2.8mm more slimmer than the iPhone 7 .. From handling it, I can say that it seems a bit more difficult than the [original] SE, who snuggles very comfortably in my hand. BUT, although it’s closer to 7, I’ll notice that it feels much more manageable because the square profile and flat side really allow you to grip the device. “Apple released a cutting-edge iPhone with bezel-less design, Face ID and one more body Small that the new iPhone SE will make it a dream device for many. With Android phones growing in size, there is no rival device to compete with it either. For that reason, it appears to be this year’s highlight iPhone.
In handling it, I can tell that it feels a bit more stretched than the SE, which just fits very comfortably in my hand. BUT though it’s closer to 7, I’ll notice it feels much more manageable because the square profile and flat side allow you to grip the device.
“I love it, I really love it when I really hold [the new models] in my hand, “explains the YouTuber.” In this second I returned to my iPhone 11 Pro with the most rounded edges, it seemed cheaper. These new phones, regardless of whether it’s the cheaper 5.4-inch iPhone or the larger 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, all feel really premium. “
In person, he goes on to say that this is “the best phone design I’ve ever had in my hand.” Interestingly, the feel of this new chassis is a popular thing that YouTuber, EverythingApplePro, has also commented on and that it was just the basic 3D printed models. The experience of holding these phones seems to be something that Apple has accomplished this year.
New sizes are also a factor. After a while with the models, iupdate notes that the model he was least interested in, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, ended up being his favorite because it was so compact and usable with one hand (note: it’s even smaller than the new iPhone. SE) I suspect this will surprise many buyers and I have already suggested it to become the best-selling iPhone 12 model, especially considering its price. By contrast, the 6.7-inch enlarged iPhone 12 Pro Max is a monster when the two models are placed side by side.
In addition to its enhanced feel, iupdate also notes that the flat edges really allow the iPhone 12’s range to stand on its bottom edge – useful for quick video chat, though not on the sides, due to its buttons. Of these buttons, the mysterious and inexplicable giant sim tray still remains.
However, one area that you should ignore with these dummy iPhone 12 units is the camera and the notch. Neither one is definitive, as iupdate emphasizes, and what you see are placeholders. Positively, this means hope remains to include Apple’s exciting new LiDAR sensor and a smaller notch, which has been in doubt recently. Apple’s decisions here could be crucial, given that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max’s 120Hz ProMotion displays are now on the mainstay as well.
That said, 2020 will see that the iPhone range works well (yes, there is 5G) and its new premium feel on hand seems to be its secret weapon.
