Apple Silicon Macs will really take off in the second half of 2021 – TSMC

Apple chipmaker TSMC says that while we expect to see the first Apple Silicon Macs before the end of this year, there will be a big boost in production starting in the second half of 2021.

Apple itself has said it hopes to complete the transition from Intel to ARM-based Macs in two years, but has given no indication of what models to expect when …

Leading analyst Ming Chi Kuo expects the first Apple Silicon Macs to be the 13-inch MacBook Pro and a redesigned 24-inch iMac. He later said that a MacBook Air can also make the year-end cut, though that could drop in early 2021.

Assuming the first Apple Silicon Macs lands by the end of the year, that would give the company until the end of 2022 the release of full-range ARM-based versions, including the Mac Pro.

Digitimes reports that TSMC expects a good performance for the third quarter of this year.

TSMC has reported strong results for the second quarter of 2020, thanks to continued strong demand for 5G infrastructure deployments and HPC-related products that were able to offset weaknesses in demand for other applications.

Now the foundry house has raised its outlook for 2020, expecting sales growth of over 20% for the year. Supply chain sources estimate that TSMC’s wafer start shipments will see a double-digit percentage point gain in the third quarter of 2020. The foundry is also reportedly manufacturing Arm-based processors for Macs. next-generation Apple to launch at the end of 2020p.

However, when it comes specifically to Apple Silicon Macs, the site says the chipmaker expects to see a big boost in orders in the middle of next year.

TSMC will see orders for Arm-based Macs increase in 2H21: TSMC is expected to see orders for Apple Macs based on its Arm-based silicon surge and contribute substantially to the foundry’s wafer sales from of the second half of 2021, according to industry sources.

Kuo recently forecast that ARM-based 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would launch in 2021, which seems like a safe bet.

Regarding the MacBook Pro, many expected Apple to revise the 13.3-inch design this year with a new design that would reduce the bezels of the screen and therefore increase the size to approximately 14 inches, as seen on the MacBook Pro. current 16 inches. However, that did not happen.

Kuo’s report indicates that the redesign is in progress, but we will have to wait at least until the middle of next year. It also suggests an upcoming update to the 16-inch industrial design.

The former head of Apple Mac development recently argued that high-end Windows PCs will also have to switch from Intel to ARM chips to keep up with the performance improvements expected from upcoming Macs.
