September is like Christmas for Apple fans: since the iPhone 5 of 2012, every new iPhone has been announced that month. But this year, thanks to coronavirus, things are looking different.
The company has already confirmed that the new iPhones will be on sale “a few weeks later” this year than usual this year, but as a leak by YouTuber and leachster John Prosser stops, we can have a better idea of the timing.
New, Custom Apple Dates!

– Pre-order and ship in Nov (no exact date yet)– Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) August 12, 2020
According to Prosser, Apple plans to announce the updated Apple Watch & iPad first, in the week of September 7th. This ‘launch’ will apparently happen via a press release, so don’t expect much fanfare.
On the other hand, Apple still seems to be planning to host some sort of iPhone 12 event on the week starting October 12, perhaps a pre-recorded video like the WWDC keynote. Keep in mind that Apple typically announced iPhones on Tuesday, so “week of October 12th” may actually mean Tuesday, October 13th.
Pre-orders for the lower-end units would begin this week (probably Friday, October 16) and ship the following week. The Pro units will follow with pre-order and shipping in November, although there are no fixed dates yet.
Prosser picks up leaked president’s own track record at 80 percent – he once was cryptic implied Apple would rename iOS to iPhoneOS – but notes that he “actually never got a statement date wrong.”
Whether the leak was accurate or not, considering Apple is almost certainly not planning to host any kind of physical event, the company probably has more flexibility to move dates than it wants this year – only to annoy the leakers .
