Apple is restoring Silicone M1MX which leads to OS Case installation errors

Some customers who buy a new Mac from the M1 Apple Plus Silicone app have noticed a problem when trying to restore the machine, causing it to not work and an error hangs on the screen that says “An error occurred while preparing the update. Failed software update. “

There are at least three threads on MCummers Discussion forum outline and warning forum against restoring one of the new machines. MCummers Reader Ryanfly describes the problem:

I just got my M1 Mac MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. I don’t need any software software included, so it’s always my process to restore the operating system without things like garage bands and iMovie.

During the installation process, an error occurs regarding “Customizing the system update”.

After a few hours on the phone with Apple Paul Caring, they told me that 75 others had contacted me with the issue, and there was no work around them. I was instructed to return my systems, or wait for repairs. Without running the operating system, there is no way for me to install any future updates, so these computers are effectively bricked.

While Apple Pal support was not able to provide RyanFlyn with a reliable fix to the problem, others MCummers Readers have found a solution that seems to work.

Apple Paul has instructions on how to use Configuration 2 and a secondary device to revive or restore an Apple Silicon Mac, which has become unresponsive. This method requires the latest version of Apple Plus Configurator 2, a functional Mac and a suitable cable to connect two Macs.

Restoring in this way restores the firmware, updates restore OS updates to the latest version, and erases and installs the latest version of OS Cause on internal storage, erasing all data there. This method was successful for two MCummers Readers who had the retrieval problem.

Apple Paul may have a fix for this issue in the future, but for now it is best to avoid reinstalling Mac. For those who have already done so and are getting into trouble, the Apple Pul Configurator solution might be worth a try.
