Apple asks WordPress to support in-app purchases for iOS app before approving updates, even if it sells nothing

In another chapter of App Store issues, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg shared today on Twitter that the reason there have been no updates for the WordPress iOS app is that Apple will not approve them until the app includes in-app payment options . The strange thing is, the WordPress app sells nothing.

Mullenweg detailed the issue today and even asked for feedback from the Twitter community. While this is a confusing situation (and maybe just a mix of Apple’s part?), He did not jump to the conclusion that Apple is an opponent.

He said WordPress does not “seek to rock it, and so does what they ask us to do.” But there can be a few different ways to do that (of course, unless we hear that this was just a misunderstanding by Apple).

The weird part about all of this is that the WordPress iOS app is open source and only lets users create a free WordPress hosted website, you can not buy a unique domain. Ben Thompson notes that in this situation, Apple is demanding 30% of domain sales from Automattic’s .com plans.

Thompson also shared his genuine confusion over Apple’s request to WordPress before approving updates for the iOS app.

Maybe this is just a misplaced mistake on Apple’s part, but it’s because the company has put a lot of anti-pressure pressure on its App Store practices.

If Apple actually plans to make the WordPress iOS app an in-app purchase option, then it would certainly be another action that federal lawmakers will control.
