CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Lincoln Project, the group of Republicans actively campaigning against Republican President Donald Trump, is out with a new television pot in Ohio, this weekend starting to focus on the president’s call for a boycott of Akron- based Goodyear Tire & Rubber.
That includes airtime purchases of $ 425,000, starting this weekend and next week – if Trump accepts the nomination during the Republican National Convention – to air the place on cable in Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown, according to a Lincoln Project spokesman. The 30-second spot will also be released on the Youngstown market.
“Times in Ohio are getting tough. “Donald Trump is making it worse, demanding a boycott to get Goodyear out of the case,” the narrator said in the ad. “That is 3,300 trade unions. Jobs that support families throughout Ohio. But why? His feelings hurt. Trump is talking a good game, but he is not on our side. Never has been. Never will it be. ”
Trump’s call for a boycott of one of Ohio’s largest employers, stemming from his anger that the company does not allow its employees to wear “MAGA” hats or other political clothing, was pushed to the forefront on Wednesday as a politician issue in the state.
Democrats, union members and Akron city officials were appalled by the attack on one of the region’s biggest economic drivers, with Republicans unwittingly disagreeing with a boycott and not commenting on the president himself.
The Akron company is one of the dominant employers for Northeast Ohio and a cultural touchstone for the city, nicknamed “Rubber City” because of its long history as a leader in American tire processing. Goodyear is still the largest American tire manufacturer.
The Goodyear ad marks the second this week of The Lincoln Project with a focus in Ohio. On Thursday, they brought up a 1-minute spot with the speech of the former Republican Gov. John Kasich at the Democratic National Convention.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
