Trying to play 60 games in just over two months is a very challenging thing to do at any time, but it is especially so when there is a pandemic of anger that can shut down entire teams for a week at a time. So I certainly understand that MLB is going to want waiting for the rain takes much longer than usual this year. Postponing and rescheduling games will be a real challenge.
But you should also keep in mind that keeping players together in a stadium longer than necessary creates an additional risk of virus transmission. So there is a balance that MLB needs to strike, and when it comes to games like today: rain all day, rain expected all night, I really don’t see keeping boys over 8 hours as the right approach.
Anthony Rizzo clearly agrees:
Hello @Reds, when do you think the window is? Asking for some friends … maybe I’ll check @HomeDepot for one? pic.twitter.com/302NfTuKvw

Player safety? @mlb let’s sit for over 8 hours inside the clubhouse … I’m sure I can find that somewhere in the 113-page player security protocol.

At the last check, the league was still making the Cubs and Reds wait for it. We will keep you informed, but if you are going to be hit, they should do it soon. Let the players go.
UPDATE: Shortly after Rizzo’s tweets, and just a few minutes after I finished posting, the game was postponed. Clearly, Rizzo is the new Commissioner.
A makeup date has yet to be scheduled for tonight’s game.
