In the coming weeks, Anthony Mackie is expected to return to work at The falcon and the winter soldier as production schedules allow. Despite being the seventh thing he filmed for Marvel Studios, the actor says in a recent interview that it is far from a perfect situation. Talking with Hamilton alum Daveed Diggs as part of Variety Actors in Actors, Mackie expressed his displeasure at having all-white teams at every property he has been involved in.
“When The falcon and the winter soldier come out, I’m the leader. When Snowpiercer comes out, you are the leader. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions, “says Mackie about Marvel’s lack of diversity.” It really bothered me that I’ve made seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every specialist, every costume designer, every PA, every person has been white. “
When it comes to a property like Black Panther Where virtually the entire cast and crew are made up of people of color, Mackie says the situation could be even worse. “But when you do Black Panther, you have a black director, black producer, you have a black costume designer, you have a black stunt choreographer, “adds the actor.” And I think that is more racist than anything else. Because if you can only hire blacks for the black movie, are you saying they aren’t good enough when you have a mostly white cast?
“Hire the best person for the job,” concludes the actor. “Even if that means we are going to get the best two women, we are going to get the best two men.”
Last June, Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso said during a Reddit Q&A that the team she helps lead is actively seeking more diverse creators for a wide variety of projects. “I would be honored to have a member of the LGBTQ + group represented in our films and I hope that the future will show it,” Alonso said in June.
In another comment, Alonso added: “I can tell you that we are actively working to make our universe as diverse and inclusive as possible. Be patient with us. We have a lot to come in the future. “
The falcon and the winter soldier It is currently slated for release in August, barring any other delays.
