Chief coach Andy Reid and Panthers coach Matt Rule will clash on Sunday, but Reid now calls himself “dumb” for the decision if they were on the same staff.
For six seasons when Reed was the Eagles coach, Rule was an assistant at a nearby temple. Reed’s son spent time as a graduate assistant for the Temple Football for Law program, and told his dad how big Rule would add to the Eagles’ staff, but Reid did not hire him, and Rule hired staff on the division’s rival giants.
“Which was a dumb thing,” Reed said via ESPN. “I need to find a place. The next thing I know, it’s with the Giants. I was, ‘Oh my God, I shouldn’t have gone there.’
Reed’s son knew that Roulette would do a great job in coaching.
“My son just kept saying, ‘This guy is an incredible football coach.’ “He’s just so smart. He knows both sides of the ball. He can coach anything. I just tell you, he’s a star down the road.” I had good staff at the time and I didn’t have room to bring anyone. There was no space, no duration. “
Reed has an impressive coaching tree. Five current NFL head coaches (John Harb Harb, Doug Pederson, Ron Rivera, Sean M’d K કdermott and Matt Nagy) have become assistant under Reed, and some former head coaches have also been assistant to Reed. But Rule is what got away with it.
