It seems that the TV dongle that was previously rumored and leaked from Google is getting closer to retail reality. 9to5 Google discovered references to the unreleased HDMI dongle in a developer preview for Android 11 for Android TV.
The likely successor to the current Chromecast Ultra appears in a video that describes how to reset the device. The oval-shaped in-display security device clearly resembles previously leaked product renderings rather than the circular design of the current and recently discounted Chromecast device.
Its appearance in the Android 11 developer preview suggests that the new device may be released alongside the release of the operating system later this year. But it is also possible that the dongle may appear earlier, with the ability to upgrade to the new operating system when the software is ready. And for what it’s worth, the developer video suggests that rebooting the device will be similar to the current Chromecast process: unplug the power cord, count to 3, reconnect.
Regardless of which operating system it ships with at launch, it’s clear that Google’s next TV dongle will arrive sometime and be compatible with Android 11 sooner or later.
