Android 11 is codenamed Red Velvet Cake, but Google won’t call it that

After ditching the dessert-based nomenclature for Android versions running Android 10, Google is retrieving it for the next one, at least internally. Android 11 is known to the engineers working on the project as Red Velvet Cake, or RVC.

That’s from Dave Burke, the company’s vice president of engineering, who revealed the internal code name in an interview on the All About Android podcast. But you will not see that it is called publicly; The only color Android 11 will get is that it will be named ‘Android R’ in the open source code for the operating system. You can listen to the revelation around 7:50.

Burke also noted that the new Android 11 features will prioritize people who connect to you on your device (as opposed to all apps that can post notifications) and better integrate with the smart devices around you. She added that the operating system, which already has a public beta version in nature, will get “some things that I’m excited about and that will appear in late summer, 4-6 weeks.”

It’s worth listening to the rest of the episode, with a half-hour interview with Burke, for more details on what Google has in mind for the next version. Find it on YouTube or listen to the audio podcast.
