Android 11 Developer Preview for Android TV announced

Historically, Android developer previews primarily focus on phones and other similar form factors. This year Google launches an Android 11 Developer Preview for Android TV.

The vast majority of Android TV streaming boxes and televisions still run on Android 9 Pie. Google announced Android 10 in December, but so far it’s only available in the ADT-3 Developer Kit. At the time, the changes are primarily focused on security, graphics performance, and easier updates rather than any user-oriented tweaking.

For the first Android 11 Developer Preview, Google is promoting “privacy, performance, accessibility and connectivity features.” More details will be provided in August as part of the “Android Beyond Phones” week.

Until then, this is just a core operating system update with no visual updates or user-oriented changes. This version is only for developers with Google that only offers a factory image for the ADT-3. All user data will be erased and it will not be possible to return to Android 10. The instructions for RP1A.200521.001 are as follows:

  1. Download the system image and unzip the file.
  2. Connect ADT-3 Developer Kit for Android TV and enable developer options.
  3. Run flash-all.sh in the unzipped folder to manually install the system image on the ADT-3 device.
