The Ravens’ most experienced offensive lineman heading to training camp has decided he won’t play in 2020.
Andre Smith, who re-signed with the Ravens this offseason to provide greater depth of the offensive line, has been placed on the opt-in / reserve list. An agreement reached between the league and the NFLPA allows players to choose not to participate in the 2020 season during the COVID-19 pandemic and receive a stipend in lieu of their full salary.
Smith, 33, has played 11 seasons, primarily with the Cincinnati Bengals, who selected him sixth overall in 2009. Smith started five games for the Bengals last season before being released in November. He signed with Baltimore on January 8 to end last season and re-signed with the Ravens in February.
The Ravens have two starting Pro Bowl tackles: left tackle Ronnie Stanley and right tackle Orlando Brown Jr., and there was no guarantee that Smith had made the 53-player roster. However, Smith was the team’s most experienced backup tackle and has played both tackling positions.
Third-round draft pick Tire Phillips could emerge as the Ravens’ main backup tackle. He was the starting left tackle for Mississippi State last season and also played right tackle in college. Will Holden, who joined the Baltimore practice team last season, is entering his fourth season in the NFL and has played both tackles.
Smith is the second Ravens player to be placed on the opt-out / reserve list, joining wide receiver / returner De’Anthony Thomas.
