AMD’s Next Generation RDNA 2 ‘Breakthrough’ Up to 225% Faster than RDNA

Tom threw a ton of information on RDNA 2 today from Moore’s law is dead, with its sources telling you that the next generation AMD Big Navi will offer up to 225% more performance over RDNA … the GPU that powered the Radeon RX 5700 XT.

According to these sources, estimates indicate that RDNA is a “a huge leap forward for them 195% to 225% of the cards currently available. But its internal estimates still project performance by dollar cards to the upper end of the range.

Another provocation is that the “top RDNA 2” would feature 72 compute units, which is where the leaks are on the flagship RDNA 2 graphics card. 40-50% faster than the current generation flagship of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Graphic card.

AMD uses 40 compute units on the Navi 10 GPU that powers the Radeon RX 5700 XT, so only on raw compute units the upgrade to 72 CU on the RDNA 2 flagship is impressive. On top of that, we are seeing an estimated 7% improvement in IPC performance, with these numbers possibly “much higher” than this.

If mixed with the highest GPU clocks somewhere in the 20-25% range, we might have a card that doesn’t outperform NVIDIA’s best GeForce RTX graphics card right now, that would be the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, but It could throw some serious blows to the next generation NVIDIA Ampere GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards.

Big Navi / RDNA 2 highlights:

  • RDNA 2 = 40-50% faster than GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: We have rumored performance improvements within RDNA 2 that would make it 40-50% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. This is impressive, as the flagship Radeon RX 5700 XT does not come close to the RTX 2080 Ti in terms of performance. You can read more about it here.
  • RDNA 2 = 195-225% faster than RDNA, also known as RX 5700 XT: RDNA 2 is a massive 195-225% faster than RDNA means it will be a truly amazing 4K game card, plus it can pump at 1080p and 1440p resolutions at 120/144 / 165FPS much easier than the Radeon RX 5700 XT .
  • 7% CPI improvement: AMD is bound to have at least a 6-7% CPI improvement in RDNA 2 over RDNA, I’d say 10% and more, but lowering estimates now will only improve what we think when AMD unleashes in November 2020.
  • NVIDIA assassin? Perhaps: If the rumors are true, then how what Jason Momoa said when asked if he thought the Justice League Snyder Cut (now known and confirmed as Zack Snyder Justice League release in 2021 as an HBO Max exclusive), then I have the following answer to the question is Big Navi and NVIDIA Killer: f * ck yes.
  • Released November 2020: This is the key. November gives AMD a couple of months to see how Ampere works and launch it when next-gen consoles launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. More about the RDNA 2 November 2020 release here.

Big Navi / RDNA 2 to launch key points in November

  • Released November 2020: First off, AMD’s November target means it puts the next-generation Radeon a couple of months behind NVIDIA if the rumors (and my sources) are true of an “August 2020 release, September release of 2020 “for the next generation Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics cards.
  • How AMD benefits from a November launch: It will allow the company to have a couple of months to see where NVIDIA has priced its next-generation cards and assess what performance is like once it gets into the hands of customers. Then AMD would have a couple of months to get ready for a possible KO coup (at least by 2020) with Big Navi.
  • Thanksgiving Launch: This is great for obvious reasons, but AMD may be inside the next generation Xbox Series X, the next generation PlayStation 5, and have an NVIDIA Killer with Big Navi, all for Thanksgiving? What better gift can AMD bring to the table for Thanksgiving than that?
  • Released with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: The stars have really lined up for AMD to make this happen, and if Big Navi’s performance is really double that of RDNA1 and a 40-50% increase over the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti? Well, we could see AMD take off in late 2020 with destruction products from Intel and NVIDIA. Amazing.
  • Lisa Su said Big Navi would arrive in late 2020: You can Read more about it here, but November is very successful with “end of 2020”, right?
