Michigan Rep. Justin AmashJustin AmashAmash Confirms He Will Not Seek Re-Election Democrats Fear The US Has Already Lost The Battle Of COVID-19 The daughter of the Michigan candidate urges people not to vote for him in a viral tweet. MORE (L) confirmed Thursday night that he was not seeking reelection to Congress, in an apparent end to his 2020 political aspirations.
Amash retweeted an article in The Detroit News that quoted an aide to the congressman saying that his re-election campaign had been “dormant” in February, and that Amash had no intention of seeking the Libertarian Party nomination for the district after leaving the Republican Party last year.
“He has not been campaigning for any office and does not plan to seek the nomination for any office,” an adviser told the publication.
“I love to represent our community in Congress. I always will. This is my choice, but I will still miss it,” added Amash in a separate tweet. “Thank you for your trust.”

Amash previously indicated in April that he would consider seeking the Libertarian Party presidential nomination, but announced a month later that he would not attempt a third-party offer to the White House. “I have spent almost three weeks evaluating the race, appearing in the media, talking to delegates and donors, watching the Libertarian Party convention plan unfold, and collecting comments from family, friends and other advisers,” Amash tweeted on that moment. “After much reflection, I have concluded that the circumstances do not lend themselves to my success as a presidential candidate this year, and therefore I will not be a candidate.”
Amash represented the 3rd District of Michigan as a Republican from 2011 to 2019, and has since qualified as an independent. A busy Republican primary will take place on August 4 to determine the next Republican Party candidate for his seat, while Democrat Hillary Scholten is running unopposed in her main candidacy for the seat.
