Alyssa Milano condemned the use of federal agents against protesters in Portland, Oregon, in a hot Twitter thread, stating that the situation should “concern everyone.”
The actress and activist went to social media on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Oregon city, which has seen several weeks of protests against police brutality and systemic racism caused by the death of George Floyd by police on May 25. .
President Trump has insisted that federal agents are necessary to protect government assets in the city, but local officials and citizens denounce the use of often unidentified officers who use military tactics even against peaceful protesters.
“What is happening with the #PortlandProtests should concern everyone,” Milano wrote Tuesday. “We are in a fight to save our democracy. People have taken to the streets to protest against police brutality and systemic racism. Protesters are being abused for exercising their right of first amendment. “

“Moms, dads, fathers, children and more are singing, singing, standing, marching, sitting, day after day and night after night to demand justice for the too many black lives taken by the police. But their calls for change have only been received with more brutality, “she wrote. “The police and federal agents are terrorizing the community, threatening lives and attacking people simply for protesting against police brutality. This is not law and order. This is illegal, it must be stopped. Trump’s anarchy must end. “
He ended his Twitter thread with a call for his followers to donate to the American Civil Liberties Union.
His comments echoed those of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who acknowledged that violence has erupted by protesters in recent weeks, including vandalism of federal buildings. However, he said those stories are drowning the message of peaceful protesters.
“Keep your troops in your own buildings, or have them leave our city,” Wheeler said Friday. “The words and actions of President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security have shown that this is an attack on our democracy.”
Last week, reports circulated that federal agents deployed in Portland did not identify themselves while detaining protesters in unidentified vans. Portland police said Monday that federal agents had deployed CS gas, also known as tear gas, to disperse the crowds.
