Teenager Alphonso Davies will face his youth hero Lionel Messi as Bayern Munich clash with the Barcelona League in the Champions League on Friday.
The German and Catalan giants have both won the European Cup five times – and the winners will be favorites to lift the title on August 23.
But Canadian left-back Davies is bidding to end his debut season in European football by lifting the trophy for the first time after defeating the Argentine superstar he raised support for.
“Honestly, I’m lost for words – a dream comes true,” said Davies, 19.
‘My mom called me yesterday and then my dad jumped on the phone, and he was like,’ So you play against your favorite player, I see. ‘
And I went, ‘Yes. ‘And then we both started laughing on the phone.
“And honestly we could not even believe it, because he knows I watched Messi when I was younger, and now playing against him, it’s really fun.
“Growing up, I’ve been waiting for him all along and now I’m defending myself against him; it’s going to be a whole other ball game.”
Bayern have already won the domestic double, reaching the final eight by defeating Chelsea.
‘Of the performances we have put in these past Bundesliga games, this Champions League game [against Chelsea]”I really think we can go all the way and win this,” Davies added.
Barcelona need to win the Champions League to avoid a trophy season – and perhaps save the role of coach Quique Setien who was only appointed in January.
Blaugraunas forward Antoine Griezmann said: ‘I have packed my suitcase when we stay until August 23 and I have even brought my PlayStation.
“We have three games left, the road is difficult, but we have the tools to win the Champions League.”
The prize winners will face Manchester City as Lyon in the semi-finals.
