Almost 50 types of salad products sold in Michigan were recalled due to the risk of parasites, more than 200 sick

The salad product recall has expanded to include more than 90 different varieties and sizes, including 49 types that were distributed and sold in Michigan. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Fresh Express voluntarily recalled the various products that were produced at its Streamwood, Illinois facility.

Products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and / or carrot ingredients should not be eaten due to possible exposure to the Cyclospora parasite. That parasite can cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection that usually presents with symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches, and fatigue. The infection is usually cured with an antibiotic, and people respond quickly to treatment, says the FDA.

So far, more than 200 illnesses have been reported related to an outbreak of Cyclospora located primarily in the Midwest. The recalled products were distributed and sold in 30 states and the District of Columbia.

The recall affects products that are marked with a product code that begins with Z. That code can be found in the upper right corner of the package. You should not eat any product that has a Z178 code or numbers less than 178 and that contains iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and / or carrot ingredients.

The company has contacted customers to advise them to “immediately remove recalled products from all stores, distribution and other inventories” so that products are no longer distributed. The company announced the recall on June 27 and the FDA issued a warning on Monday.

Last week, a recall was announced affecting brands distributed at Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco and Aldi grocery stores. Hy-Vee is one of the brands involved in the latest announcement.
