Alex Lewis defends Jets coach Adam Gase

Jets coach Adam Gase recently found himself blaming the safety Jamal Adams wanted, according to an article by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Jets guard Alex Lewis has taken Gase.

“I have great respect for Coach Gase,” Lewis said on Instagram. “We have great staff in the building, both on offense and defense. We are building a winning culture and mindset from the top down. I believe in this staff, in this organization and, most importantly, in my teammates. I realize that everyone has a job to do, our jobs are multifaceted. In the locker room, workout room, weight room, meeting room and on the field we are building a winning culture. I felt that all of this had to be said right after reading Manish Mehta’s article that grouped all players in a mindset belittling the head coach. I am proud to be a New York jet. . . . “

Mehta, in his article on Adams, wrote that “[p]the layers disrespect Gase, who has rubbed them wrong with his inability to lead and lack of support. “Mehta also wrote that”[t]or too many people on 1 Jets Drive, including players, coaches and members of the central office, do not trust or believe in Gase, whose false inclination has not been lost on the people of the organization, “and that the players” painted the image of an insecure figure always ready to point out others for the team’s failures last season. “

Lewis said to Mehta separately: “[G]Live your sources. You don’t speak for the locker room or for me. You have no place in the locker room if you’re going to over-generalize to all players. Manish, you are a poison to this team.

Whatever the reason, Adams clearly wants to leave New York. And as he was looking for an extension and those conversations were cut short, it’s fair to conclude that if the Jets had given Adams what he wanted he would have been happy to continue playing for Gase. Which tends to contradict the idea that Gase is the problem.
