Alex Azar arrives in Taiwan, marking the most senior American visit in decades

Secretary Azar landed at Taipei Songshan Airport at 4.48pm local time on Sunday, HHS spokesman said. There will be no public events until Monday, the spokesman added.

During his visit, Azar will meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and several other ministers, an HHS spokesman said earlier.

When Azar and other members of the U.S. delegation got off their plane, they wore face masks and were given Covid-19 tests, as required as part of their visit, the department said in a statement. A HHS spokesman said that everyone in the delegation should test negative for coronavirus upon arrival in Taiwan and that the delegation will wear masks throughout the trip, except in “rare circumstances.”

The group was greeted by members of Taiwan’s State Department of Foreign Affairs, including the director general of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and the director of the American Institute in Taiwan.

Taiwan has reported 479 cases and seven deaths out of a population of 23 million people.
