Alabama-Notre Dame in 2020 is not happening, says AD

Alabama vs. Notre Dame on Labor Day weekend?

Not so fast, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said Saturday morning after talks about a renewal of rivalry gained strength online.

The conversation started with a radio interview in which Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan. I was with Thom Abraham on 97.7-FM, which led to this tweet from the show’s account.

Gary Stoken, from Chic Fil A Kickoff Classic, said on the show that Notre Dame has been featured as a week-long opponent for Alabama in South Bend, Tuscaloosa or Dallas … and there is a stage where Virginia-Va Tech plays in Atlanta if ACC / SEC goes to the “Conference +1” schedule, the tweet said.

Notre Dame currently has a game with Navy on the schedule for the first game on September 5. Alabama canceled its first game for that date when the Pac-12 announced that it would play only conference games in 2020. That rejected the Labor Day weekend game with USC.

Since the Pac-12 announcement on July 10, there has been speculation about Alabama’s solution to the programming gap.

Well, Byrne threw cold water at any hope of a confrontation between Alabama and Notre Dame this fall.

Alabama and Notre Dame have a home and home established for 2028 and 2029.
