Alabama appears to be closing in on a new Week 1 opponent.
If Crimson Tide ends up playing more than just SEC teams this year, there’s a good chance Tide will open the season against BYU, sources told AL.com.
Alabama and BYU were originally slated to open the year against teams from the Pac 12 (USC and Utah), but the Pac-12 recently moved to a conference schedule for this year only, thus canceling those games.

Although Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan recently mentioned Notre Dame as a potential Week 1 opponent for Tide, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne posted on Twitter Saturday morning that Tide and Notre Dame will not play this season.
BYU, an FBS independent, ended each of the past two years 7-6.
A game against Alabama would be the Cougars’ third game against an SEC program in the past four years. They beat Tennessee in double overtime early last season.
