Alabama adds 888 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, breaks record for 7-day average


Alabama capped a week of record coronavirus numbers with another unwanted milestone today. The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 888 new cases of the virus overnight, taking the state’s 7-day average of new daily cases to a record 782.7. The previous high was 779, set on June 16.

The 888 new cases are tied for fifth place in a single day since the start of the pandemic. The state has seen high numbers for each of the past four days: All four are in the top five for the highest daily new case count.

The state has now reported 34,605 ​​total coronavirus cases, with 18,866 of which have been recovered.

The state also reported 11 new deaths today, bringing the total number of coronavirus deaths to 898.

The evidence has been up and down in Alabama. The state started the week with low test numbers, before seeing a big increase on Thursday. ADPH reported a little over 6,000 new tests today, reducing the 7-day average to 6,418 per day.

The percentage of tests that have tested positive in the last week is 12.2 percent, the highest in the last 10 days.

Jefferson County, home to Birmingham and the state’s most populous county, added more than 100 cases for the third consecutive day. Today saw 122 new cases, and now it has more than 3,600 cases since the start of the pandemic, the most in the state. Jefferson passed Montgomery County today.

The 7-day average for Jefferson County eclipsed 100 cases a day for the first time today, rising to 106.3, the highest 7-day average of any Alabama county seen during the pandemic.

Mobile County recorded the state’s second-highest daily total of cases at 91. Marshall County, which saw cases rise to ‘out of control’ levels this week, added the third-highest in the state at 63, despite having less than half the population of some other counties near the top of the list. Montgomery County added 55 cases on Saturday and Tuscaloosa added 44, completing the top 5.
