The couple, a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, were found falling about 100 feet with a snow-capped cliff band on Door Mountain, the NPSA said.
Their bodies were found by Park Service Rangers with the help of Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue and a helicopter from the Main Forest Service, according to NPS. NPS Rangers and Maine State Police are investigating with the help of the Bar Harbor Police Department.
The two hikers arrived at Bar Harbor in Maine on Tuesday and were last heard around noon on Thursday. The woman discussed the interest in hiking Cad Dilek Mountain during a phone call with family members, NPSA said.
The NPSA said the couple did not decide to schedule from their hotel on Friday afternoon or returned to the vehicle when their location concerns increased. The search began Friday night after family members reported the couple’s excessive release for investigation.
The overnight search involved a Coast Guard helicopter equipped with thermal imaging, which failed to detect heat signatures near the Door and Cadillac Mountains, the NPSA said. Authorities said foot searchers found the bodies late Saturday morning.
