The following contains key spoilers from the ABC series finale Agents of Marvel from SHIELD
Decide on the series-ending lots of the Agents of SHIELD. was not a daunting task, but a fun one, says one of the showrunners of the Marvel drama.
When it came to figuring out who would end up where, what to do, and with whom in the closing sequence of the series finale, which followed a one-year leap, “I do not remember that I was with that too much stride, “co-showrunner Jed Whedon told this week’s press. “I mean, it was fun” – in part because the rest of that last episode was so packed with temporary wimey crises and solutions.
“In the first half,” Whedon notes, “it was, ‘There are so many moving parts to this thing thing. My brain will explode!’ And this was just blue sky, ‘What could it be?’ It’s just fun to think about, and there are a lot of great options. “
Simply put, in determining where Coulson, May, Daisy et al would end up, “We kind of tried to put everyone in a different feeling thing and in a different place and separate them as much as possible,” Whedon said. ‘But I do not remember wrestling with that. I think this was more just the fun of the end. “
As revealed in the last sequence, when each team member digitally left their virtual, one-year-later reunion on the New York spoken word:
MACK is still a (dust-bearing) bigwig with SHIELD, and is currently overseeing matters on board a helicopter. His partner YOLANDA is also a decorated SHIELD agent, and came back to chase an 0-8-4 with PIPER and in LMD DAVIS. “It’s clear that Mack and Yo-Yo are still in a relationship and working together – and proud of each other, ”said co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen.
FITZSIMMONS are retired with a Capital-R, and left the meeting to resume a rural picnic with Alya. “I think for a long time, we had the realization that Fitz and Simmons were going to be kind of SHIELD and live the simpler life – while working secretly with Daisy on the side,” Whedon said. (To read many more about that happiest ending.)
MEIE is an (exhaustive!) instructor at a SHIELD academy named after no less than the late Agent Phil Coulson; FLINT is among their cadets. ‘I think it made perfect sense to us that May would be a teacher at Coulson Academy. Like, that all just upsets her relationship with Coulson [and her as] the reluctant teacher, ”said Tancharoen. ‘She’s always been the wise teacher among the group, the kind of mother figure, and also to end her relationship with Coy (Stewart, who plays Flint) and knew that she helps to stimulate the life of all these potentials. agents…. That made our wonderful sense. ”
DAISY is still at SHIELD, working aboard Zephyr 3 as an ‘astral ambassador’ (as her partner’s typewriter-loving ‘dork’ puts it). SOUSA (who calls her to a foreign life with a ET screening) and has a sister KORA are on their side. “When it comes to space, we love that feeling – especially since our budget constraints became a concern – that it feels extensive, and we wanted someone out there to explore it,” Whedon explained. “It felt good to place them there, at the behest of the Sefir.”
COULSON is still his LMD / Chronicom hybrid self, mullet a sabbatical while having an open invitation from May to come spin some yarn for the kiddos at the Academy. Appropriately, in a call to the end of the ABC series’ very first episode, he just got his “Lola” back (thanks to Mack, forever the mechanic), who he pilots, up and away before things turn black.
One agent who did net make it to go back to the original timeline was Deke; instead, FitzSimmons ‘grandfather volunteered to stay behind in the 1980s after 1) putting down the gizmo needed to support others in timeline-engraved quantum reals, 2) taking a lead in’ e SHIELD of that era and 3), you know, be the rock god he is.
“The one thing we talked a little bit about was leaving Deke behind,” suggested EP Bell, “but having him make what was truly a great sacrifice … makes sense.” Plus, the producers love the idea of a lunar eclipse of a star with a spy organization (or vice versa). ‘If we ever came back for another [series], it would be you show, ”qued Whedon.
All considered together, the SHIELD EPs hope that the decisions that have been made resonate with viewers in the long run as strongly as they did with the writers.
‘Seven Seasons is a long time to work on the show, to invest in these characters, to live in this story, as in the production aspect of things, and in our relationships with each other, the writers, the actors and everyone involved at the show, ”stated Tancharoen. ‘The emotional context of saying goodbye to this experience … is definitely something that reflects in the place from where we leave our characters at the end of the show. That it is for us very personal, and I think there is a sense of hope for what is coming for each of them. ”
And as Mack himself remarked – and to drive home the theme of the show, the finale, and where the agents eventually fought for – SHIELD was a family.
After the leap of one year, “They are already stuck in their new life, but it does not matter, there is still a long way to go, and I think that will always be the case,” said Tancharoen. ‘That bond between them will always be there. That, hopefully, that kind of hits home at the end for [everyone]. ”
