Agent confirms 49ers WR Jalen Hurd tore his ACL, ending his season

The San Francisco 49ers were hoping to finally see what versatile wide receiver Jalen Hurd could do in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. The wait will have to continue. Doug Hendrickson, Hurd’s agent, of The Wasserman Group confirmed that the MRI on Monday revealed that the second-year receiver received a torn ACL after he went to the ground on Sunday while working with a strength coach on a sideline.

“It’s a torn ACL, just a straight ACL,” Hendrickson said during a KNBR interview. “Nothing more than that. Nothing else involved. Just a torn ACL.”

Hurd will undergo surgery in ‘a few weeks’, Hendrickson said.

The forecast was what head coach Kyle Shanahan expected.

“I saw that the ACL was reported today. It would be a surprise if it is not,” Shanahan told reporters Monday. “It happened yesterday. He has the MRI at the moment, but it’s a very unfortunate thing for him … For him to get hurt before he actually had to get out, just a freak thing in the air, cutting.”

Hurd will land on wounded reserve, Shanahan said later during the press conference.

“I felt really bad for the boy, but he will be back next year,” the coach added.

The 49ers tried to reduce Hurd back after the 6-foot-5 receiver missed his entire rookie season with a back injury. He was restricted during the first two practices of the training camp team, participating in individual drills, and then went to a side field for some more individual work during team drills.

Begin reports from those who observed the injury that it did not appear to be too serious. Hurd spent a few minutes on the field, but in the middle he managed to get up.

The injury was apparently heavier than most thought.

“Jalen knows full well that he needs to work his tail off so that he can return and be a great participant, and try to earn opportunities to be a participant for our team that is moving forward,” general manager John Lynch said in April. “We love his skill set. We love his thoughts. Now is the time to put it all to work.”

The 49ers made Hurd a draft pick for third from 2019 from Baylor.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Monday that the 49ers plan to work out veteran wide receiver Jaron Brown this week. He will have to pass three COVID-19 tests before that can happen.

Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, spoke with reporters after Monday’s practice and after the NFL Network reported that the team expects an MRI to reveal that wide receiver Jalen Hurd has a torn ACL on Sunday. “We have not got the result yet,” Shanahan said. “I saw that the ACL was reported today. It would be a surprise if it is not. It happened yesterday. He has the MRI at the moment, but it’s a very unfortunate thing for him.” We know what he went through last year with his return, and the man has worked as hard as anyone on our team to get back. “For him to hurt before he actually had to get out of there, just a freak thing in the air, cutting. I felt really bad for the man, but he will be back next year.” Hurd went down

The San Francisco 49ers will hold their first training camp practice today. So far, the team has participated in walk-throughs. The session is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with head coach Kyle Shanahan speaking to reporters afterward via a video conference call. Several players will then be made available. Below are some notes for exercises. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead will not practice due to some “back irritation.” Wide receiver Jalen Hurd and tight end Jordan Reed will participate but will be relieved again. Both players missed the very last season. Hurd treated a back injury while Reed treated the symptoms of a concussion. New 49ers, wide receivers Tavon Austin and JJ Nelson, are set to practice despite not

The San Francisco 49ers held their second practice camp training session on Sunday. As will be the case with all practices, fans are not allowed and the restricted media that attend must observe social distance due to the coronavirus pandemic. That means keeping six feet away from players and staff and always wearing face cover. No face-to-face interviews are allowed as player and availability of staff is done via video conference. The 49ers have two more practices left before players get a day off on Wednesday. Monday’s session will be the first padded exercise. Below are some Sunday practice notes from various media outlets
