Some mistakes are worse than others; While we are used to seeing the strange graphic or audio problem in our games, these usually don’t make a game impossible to win, but it seems that Paper Mario: The Origami King it’s loaded with a design issue, which means you can’t complete it.
The problem, as detailed in the video below, involves the section where you are tasked with visiting four spas in the Shangri-Spa area to gain access to a fifth secret spa. The problem is that once the NPC that watches the entrance requests to see the membership card required to enter, it is completely removed from your inventory, so if you leave the area for any reason, you will no longer be able to access because you do not have the membership card, nor does the NPC remember taking it from you; It is also not possible to get a replacement.
To make matters worse, this area is towards the end of the game, and if you inadvertently save your progress after making this mistake, you will have to restart the entire game from scratch as it is not possible to go back to previous saves, such as you can in let’s say Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That means losing about 30 hours of progress.
But that’s not all: According to Gaming Reinvented, there is a second game design issue that prevents players from getting 100% completion. This is present in the Snif / Shroom City area, where, if you turn off the water at the hotel and leave without By releasing the Toad that is used as a surfboard, it is impossible to release that Toad later in the game. While this is not as dramatic an issue as you can still finish the game, you won’t get that all-important 100% rating.
We imagine that Nintendo will fix both of these problems fairly quickly, but please let us know if you’ve made a mistake with this design issue by posting a comment below.
