A person shot at South Shore Plaza in Braintree; stores remain closed

One person was shot at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree on Friday afternoon in what officials believe was a targeted attack on the victim.

The person was taken to a local hospital with non-fatal injuries, according to information from the Braintree Police Department posted on Twitter. The incident appeared to be a targeted act of violence, police tweeted, “not an active shooter.”

The stores were closed on Friday afternoon. Tactical units were cleaning the mall around 5:40 pm

As of 6 p.m., no suspect was in custody, according to Braintree police, who tweeted that the suspects left the mall on foot. Police asked neighborhood residents to shelter in place and call the police if they saw anything suspicious.

“Our special tactical operations team and K-9 units are helping local police clean up the mall, but we believe the suspect fled the mall prior to the police response,” wrote the state police spokesman. Dave Procopio in an email.

This is breaking news and will be updated as more information becomes available.
