An officer has been shot inside a police station in Croydon after failing to find a gun hidden on a recently arrested suspect, who later tried to take his own life.

The incident happened at about 02:15 local time at the Cryden Custody Center in Windmill Lane. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested prior to the shooting, and was found working suspiciously at Croydon Town Center after allegedly seizing ammunition.

She was treated by colleagues and paramedics at the scene just before she was transported to the hospital by air ambulance, where she died shortly afterwards.

The suspect turned his shotgun on himself when apprehended by a police officer on the porch of the house where the shootings took place. An investigation into the murder has been launched. No police firearms were used during the incident, according to Met Police.

“It simply came to our notice then. My heart goes out to her family, direct colleagues and friends. “ Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said in a statement.

“When a colleague dies in the line of duty, shockwave and sadness reverberate throughout Matt and our communities.” He added.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also launched a separate investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn that a metropolitan police officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty.” Home Secretary Preeti Patel spoke about the incident, while expressing condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues.

“This is a sad day for our country and another horrific reminder of how our police officers are endangered every day to keep the rest of the people safe.”
