CLEVELAND, Ohio – The most risky trading date in MLB history will arrive on August 31st. This will be a choice for your poisoning, even for the most cold-blooded baseball player.
Major league matches are played, but no scouts are allowed in the ball parks to watch. The minor season was canceled weeks ago and trades can only be made from the 60 players in each team’s pool. Not to mention that the coronavirus could end the 60-game season at any moment.
Recently, however, an information channel has been opened for teams. MLB has approved a way for teams to exchange video and data from their alternative training sites with other teams. All teams have to do is choose what the Indians have done.
So if the Indians want to make a move, teams have a way to scout their extra players at Classic Park in Eastlake and vice versa. It’s not the biggest appearance because the players in Eastlake play in-squad games and they do not have enough players for two full teams. Still pitch speeds and Statcast information is available.
“Major League Baseball has reached an agreement to share data between clubs leading up to the trade date,” said GM Mike Chernoff. “A number of teams – in fact the vast majority of teams – have opted for that. That’s a way to share both data and video about guys on the alternative site.
‘So when we approach the term for trading, you’re kind of blind flying when you trade for someone who’s on one of those alternate sites. This provides a little more visibility for how boys are doing and allows our scouts, despite not being in the park, to lock in the date and video to assess where boys are. ”
Chernoff said trade discussions with other teams focus on the fact that so few games have been played.
“The most important variable is just that we are 22 games into the season,” Chernoff said. ‘Typically you would say things,’ we need to ride this out and see if this guy comes around, or see what this guy looks like after a few weeks. ‘We have the luxury of time to make such decisions.
‘While I’m talking to other GMs and Chris (Antonetti) is talking to other guys, we hear the same thing from her. The biggest factor is trying to get a really good assessment of where our own guys are and where we might need to make tweaks to the roster. That’s a much harder thing to do in a 20-25 game sample than it would be in an 80 game sample in a typical season if you lead to the trade date. “
Indian players who perform well in the alternative camp include right-hander Triston McKenzie, left-hander Sam Hentges, veteran right-hander David Hernandez and outfielder Jake Bauers. A number of the younger players, including catcher Bo Naylor, have done well.
No. 1: Roberto Perez returns, Sandy Leon leaves
Catcher Roberto Perez was activated from the injured list and started Tuesday night against the Pirates. Sandy Leon, who replaced Perez, had to leave the team due to a family affair. The Indians place him on the Emergency Family List and remember outfielder Greg Allen from Eastlake.
Perez played just three games before joining IL after injuring his right shoulder in the season opener on July 24.
“I’m ready to go, man,” Perez told reporters about a Zoom call. ‘I think those guys in Lake County, the training staff, did a pretty good job. I started to catch and I knew when I tried to extend, to go down to 90 feet, 120 feet, that was when I knew I was ready to go. There was no pain, there were no restrictions, so I felt just like myself and ready to come here and contribute to the team. ”
Perez said it was difficult to play the Indians on TV.
“I thought they were playing really well when I was out,” Perez said. ‘It’s hard to watch the game on TV, especially with the group of guys we have. I wanted to be here. You know, if this season had been normal, I would have gone out of my way to be with them and support them, but it’s hard now with all the protocols. You need to stay home and follow guidelines and things like that. “
Beau Taylor will serve as the Tribe’s backup catcher. Leon must remain on the family emergency list for at least three days.
No. 2: As a conclusion
The Indians have not won a game in Pittsburgh since July 3, 2015. Trevor Bauer was the winning pitcher in that game. It was also the game in which Bauer, at an at-bat, imitated several of his teammates handball positions. Francisco Lindor is the only member of the starting lineup from that game still with the Indians. . .Franmil Reyes entered the game on Tuesday with 11 RBI in its last nine games. In his second record appearance against the Pirates, he hit a sacrificial fly to give him 12 RBI in 10 games. Reyes’ homer against the Tigers recorded a downtime of 114.1 mph on Sunday. It is the hardest hit homer by an Indian player since Statcast was introduced in 2015. The Indians entered the game 10-0 on Tuesday when they scored three or more runs this season. They were 11-1 when they first scored.
