You will soon realize that Ghost of Tsushima has no problem becoming a samurai killing machine relatively early in the game, but as you progress you become increasingly powerful and so do the enemies, and some of the encounters they are flooded with enemies. As such, I wanted to go through a specific “build” that I have found to be extremely effective in the game, and unique in that it barely uses the basics of combat, arrest, and evasion, which I know some people hate.
I don’t like constructions in Tsushima that rely on limited use items like arrows or ghost weapons, and this Gosaku construction doesn’t need either.
The core of this build is the Gosaku set, which you can obtain from a “legendary” search for the musician in Act 2. This requires you to release six different farms and get the keys to a final area where you can fight someone and get the armor. . Here is a guide for that.
What does the Gosaku set do? When it’s fully updated you get:
- A massive increase in health.
- A major increase to stagger the damage
- 20% health on killing staggered enemies
The whole core of this build is stagger, stagger, stagger, and rely on postures 100% of the time.
Before I get into the game, here is a list of the charms I use for construction, since that’s really the only other part you can customize besides the set:
Amaterasu Charm – Killing enemies gives a moderate amount of health. Combine this with the armor bonus and I think you have up to at least 30% health with a staggered kill. It is wild. You cannot die unless you really ruin an encounter. This is a sanctuary charm that you can get here.
Shinatsuhiko Charm – Staggering an enemy prevents interrupted melee attacks for 6 seconds. Thus, each time she wobbles, she can chain herself into more stepping without fear of being interrupted or knocked down, even by unlockable attacks. You will have the damage, but you can go through it. Another sanctuary charm, guide here.
Knocking spell – The rest of these are minor enchantments. I only have one of these to increase stepping damage. I’m not sure if I need it, but I can stagger anyone in 1-2 shots between this and the armor.
Talisman of Ferocity x2 – I have two of these because this build doesn’t have the best melee damage outside of stepping.
The Charm of Inara’s Power – This is from the Sanctuaries of Zorro, and it is an upgradeable charm that will end up giving health to both and armor the more shrines you find.
Okay, so how does all this work?
The key is the postures. You’ll quickly unlock all four poses in-game, and I wrote a full article on the best way to use this tactic yesterday. In short, you should pause (with slow time R2) in the middle of the fight to change your stance depending on the enemy you are fighting with, since you will do about 3 times the staggered damage if you have “matched” correctly, this is how you break his guard in 1-2 hits. You should be effectively staggering each enemy you fight in addition to the archers, and you gain 30% health on kill. the only The time I use to stop is if I’m overcrowding, but you hardly need it, especially with the charm that allows you to fight through attacks. I only dodge when I have to roll towards the archers to disembowel them.
I recommend memorizing which button each pose is, as you will soon be able to do it without even thinking about it. You must also memorize the combos in the staggered unlock trees. The shield, for example (retention triangle, then maceration triangle) is essentially a one-hit combo for any shield enemy once you’ve mastered it.
This is a kind of glass cannon construction with no defense or spell abilities, and yet it heals so much in staging that killing honestly doesn’t matter. This is also a good build for duels because staggered damage comes into play there, and even with a boss, you can usually break the guard in 3-4 hits.
For phantom weapons I would use the Kunai as they can stagger enemies and that counts for your life when killing. I use the bow sparingly for archers and distant dogs. I also avoid matchups because they get very difficult in late game and it is often more efficient just charging. I save almost all of my resolution for “health potions” in case I need them, but you can use Heavenly Strike if you do. want, because it does great damage to staggered enemies.
In short, this build governs and is essentially the only one I use right now, despite having all sets unlocked. I hope you have as much fun as I do.
