It’s definitely interesting to get a glimpse of what might have happened! Clearly, there were some interesting ideas about how the character would have felt. The third image, in particular, seems almost reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog, which would make sense given how popular the character was around that time.
While art books have become increasingly common over the past few years, the video game industry has a poor track record when it comes to preserving its own history. As such, it is nice to see that these early creations have existed for years since then Super Mario RPGReleased, back in 1996. Now that Jano’s early artwork has come out, it will be interesting to see if any of Mallo’s concept art has survived!
