On Tuesday around 3:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a man firing a pistol near the town of Davenport, approximately 11 miles northwest of Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Soon after, the same man is suspected of car theft and left in the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Agents attempted to stop the car, but the man refused to stop, driving more than 100 mph south to Santa Cruz.

When the man arrived in Santa Cruz, officers ended the search for community safety, the sheriff’s office said.

Moments later, the Santa Cruz Police Department located the man who was driving on West Cliff Drive, a coastal highway, where the suspect crossed the cliff and entered the Pacific Ocean, police said.

The suspect got out of the car and went up the cliff, where the agents stopped him. No injuries were reported, the sheriff’s office said.
