About 800 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Kern County on Monday, continuing a dramatic increase in new case counts that started over the weekend.
On Saturday, about 500 new cases were reported and on Sunday more than 700 new cases were reported.
No new deaths have been announced beyond the 105 reported last week.
The total number of cases so far in the county is now 9,244 and there are now almost as many people with active infections as those who have recovered.
Testing at Kern has skyrocketed in recent weeks, probably accounting for at least part of the increase in positives. Up to 11 percent of the county’s population, or more than 100,000 people, have been tested for the virus as of Monday, according to the Kern County Public Health Services website.
In the past month, nearly 50,000 virus tests were processed among county residents, the same number that had been performed in the previous three-month period.
Hospitalizations continued stable over the past week, with 248 COVID-19 patients reported on Sunday, 64 of whom were in the ICU.
