Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott will remain as such, at least contractually, through the 2025 NFL season. The team announced Wednesday that McDermott has inked a new extension with the club through that season.
Since McDermott was technically under contract for the next two years, in terms of a list of things on the organization’s to – do list, he could get himself under a new deal, maybe not no. 1 … but it was there for sure. And now that the deed has been done and signed, there are many things to consider with this enormous news.
Here are seven takeaways from Sean McDermott’s expansion with the Bills:
National narrative remains
McDermott has by no means been a perfect coach. He had his mix of blunders like scenarios for clock control and the replacement of Tyrod Taylor by Nathan Peterman in the middle of a playoff race. But these situations are greatly overshadowed by the new national experience around the Bills, created by McDermott.
For almost two decades, the Bills were … nothing short of a joke. From property that was previously involved in decisions, to a lack of profits, to players who openly said they would rather play anywhere else. The bottom line of Buffalo was the bottom of the barrel in 2017 when Rex Ryan was fired with one game left in the season.
But McDermott came in and revitalized this organization. Sure, others helped him along the way, but after the Rex-Doug Whaley failure of the past, the Bills organization made one man the face of this franchise, and that’s McDermott. By keeping McDermott round and not losing him, the phrase “same old Bills” holds a much different weight.
While keeping their leader and bank boss running, yes, these are the same (new) Bills we are used to. Those who are accustomed to admiring throughout the league, not shoved to the back of the line. Losing McDermott could have done all this completely undone, but the Bills did not let it happen.
